House Painting Options From Professional Painters

November 19, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

One of the easiest ways to make a major change in your decor is to paint. By hiring a professional with a commitment to quality like this interior house painter in Calgary, you are assured of getting a great paint job which makes your home more attractive and inviting. While anything is now possible in interior design, you can decorate your walls in ways that reflect your personality and style.

The Walls in a Home

The walls of your home are an important part of the overall structure and decor. The fastest way to redecorate a room is to change the color of the walls. Your walls can make a dramatic statement or be a neutral backdrop for furniture, art, and accessories. It’s important to choose colors you like rather than follow the latest color trends.

Paints come in an unlimited array of colors, and you can custom make colors. You can paint one or two walls in a room a bold color or paint the walls using various decorative techniques for subtle textures. Professional painters can help you to find the right color for each room of your house.

The Types of Paint

Paints are available in different types such as flat, semi-gloss and gloss. The type of paint you choose depends on a number of factors. For example, high-gloss paint has a nice sheen which is easy to clean. This might work best in kitchens or children’s bedrooms. A flat finish may do well in the living room, depending on the look you want.

Whatever type of paint you use, it’s important to use non-VOC paints or low-VOC paints. Paints without volatile organic compounds (VOCs) don’t emit toxic fumes or gases. These paints are also best for people with health problems such as asthma, or allergies, or have chemical sensitivity issues. VOC paints can cause a host of other health problems as well. By using non-VOC paints, the interior of your home has better air quality, so residents can breathe easier.

Non-VOCs paints are growing in popularity as more people embrace green living. The quality of these paints is just as good as traditional paints, only without the toxic smells. Most major brands of paint now have a low- or non-VOC line of products.

When decorating your home, the walls are one of the major features like the floors, doors, and windows. Although you can paint the walls yourself, you will get better results by hiring professional painters.

How to Use Stuffed Animals to Decorate Your Child's Room

October 10, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

Many parents get annoyed with the many stuffed animals that their children tend to collect over the years. There is a way to keep them organized and use them to educate your child at the same time. Below you will find a few ideas and suggestions that may prove to be helpful.

The first thing that you can do, which is something that I have done for years is to use an old shoe rack to organize your child’s stuffed animals. In order to make sure that they do not fall off the shoe rack we use little velcro tabs. You can find the velcro tabs at your local arts and crafts store. You can get a pack of velcro and then simply tie them around the arm or leg of the stuffed animal. Arrange the stuffed animals as neatly as possible on the shoe rack. Then when your child wants to play with one they can take off the Velcro and play with their animal. When they are done they should get into the habit of placing them back on the rack.

Another suggestion is to put up some shelves in your child’s room and use the bears to decorate the shelves. To make them a little more unique you can put pictures in between each of the stuffed animals. This is a great way to use the bears if your child is getting older and they are no longer playing with the stuffed animals. Next on the list of creative ways to decorate your child’s room is to place a hook in each corner of the room. You can use plastic hooks that can be easily removed when you no longer want them hung up. You can find these at your local arts and crafts store or your local home supply store. Once you have the hooks up you can get four old hats. Perhaps a few hats that are too small for your child. Then place the stuffed animal inside of the hat. If the animal is too big for the hat you can still squeeze them inside. Then take some colored yard and tie it around the hat. Use a glue gun to secure the yarn to the hat. You will need a few drips of clue on the hat and then place the yarn on top of the glue spots. Then allow it to dry. Once the yarn is secure turn the hat over and stuff the bear inside You can then tie the loose pieces of the yard to the hooks. This is a nice and creative way to display stuffed animals and add a little something extra to the room décor.

Spring/Summer Fireplace Decor Ideas

September 30, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

Springtime is here. Daylight savings time is in practice. Air conditioners are in use. Summer clothes are being brought out of storage.

Cold weather is gone. Well, for me at least. My sister, currently residing in Maine, is still experiencing cold wet days.

However, one day she will not. They do have spring and summer in Maine. Those seasons are just experienced simultaneously and for only three months, but still that is three months she will not use her fireplace. What can she do with it? Where has this come from? What magazine was I perusing or home improvement show had I viewed that suddenly brought about this need to make her fireplace appear springy? Summery?

Nothing, I met a friend for lunch and she told me she branched up her fireplace. What? Branching up? My friend is tired of her fireplace. We live in Texas… and she only used it once this year. (Wow- really? It has been a cold one here… even I used the heat more. Alas, I do not have a fireplace.) She told me she decorated with the tried and true method of fireplace decorating and filled it with a candelabra and candles. However, after one week she knew that candles were not the way she wanted to go.

Spring/Summer Fireplace Décor Ideas- Think inside the box… literally

My friend decided to use the fireplace for its purpose… to store branches, logs and twigs. She went in her back yard and gathered various sizes of wood… and then to her neighbors, and around the block gathering pieces of wood she liked. She told me she placed all the pieces of wood in the fireplace until there was no space left… and that was she was left with was a nice reminder of outside. Okay, then. My sister could do that. It is a pretty cool idea.

Spring/Summer Fireplace Décor Ideas- Bring nature in

Rather than completing filling the fireplace with wood pieces, strategically place plants all around the hearth and the inside of the fireplace. Use matching colored pots of various shapes and sizes. I like that idea. Only she has animals and she would have to pot only non poisonous plants.

Spring/Summer Fireplace Décor Ideas- Create Art

Rather than using candles of various shapes and sizes or flowers. Fill the fireplace with vases. Pick a theme and go from there. All the same color, all the same metal, all the same style. Have fun.

Spring/Summer Fireplace Décor Ideas- Look closely

Fill the fireplace with a perfect fit mirror. How interesting would that be? Mirrors reflect light so that could really liven up a room. Instant art mirrored by whatever is on the floor! Another friend of mine has an LED hula hoop. Maybe my sister could make an LED display on her fireplace… but that might be too head- achey, eh?

Hey, these are some great ideas… I am so glad I am going to visit her in May and we can work on decorating her fireplace. After all… it is no longer fireplace weather in Maine in May, right?

Sports Party Theme Decorating Ideas

August 24, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

A sports theme is great for birthday parties, summer parties and even for your super bowl party. Check this article out for great sports theme decorating ideas.

For a specific theme, like baseball or basketball, you can have all the kids wear their baseball uniforms or jerseys to the party.

A baseball, basketball and even soccer cake is easy to make. Just bake a round cake and then ice using the color you need. Baseballs are real easy to make. Just ice with white icing and then use red icing for the stripes. Just look at a real ball to figure out how to draw the lines. If it isn’t perfect, that is okay. It will be something fun to do and the kids can even help. Cupcakes are real easy too using the same concept.

Locations for parties can be fun to plan as well. You can have parties at ballparks, parks, and your backyard. Use your imagination to have the party somewhere that fits your theme.

For food and snacks you can serve hot dogs and drinks. You can buy an inexpensive metal tub to ice down your drinks. Great for outdoor parties. You can also serve chips and dips at your party.

One way to save money on decorating items and plasticware is to buy only a few theme plates, cups and napkins and then buy coordinating solid colors to match. Solid colors are a lot cheaper than the theme party items. You can even check local dollar store or Wal-mart for even cheaper prices than the party store.

Some great party favor ideas for a sports party could be cracker jacks, bubble gum, sunflower seeds, peanuts and baseball cards. Instead of buying expensive party favors at the party store check your local dollar store for better deals for other small treats.

There are a lot of fun games you can play at a sports theme party. At a baseball party you may can even get a baseball game going with all the kids. At a football party have a competition to see who can kick the football the farthest. You can also make up your own obstacle course for the kids to do. The egg toss game is always fun.

Another decorating tip is to look around your house at what you already have to use for your party. A glove and helmet could be used for holding chips. You could put napkins inside a ball glove. Sometimes just checking around your home we can find awesome decorating tools that won’t cost a thing. It is very easy to have a fun sports theme party without having to spend a lot of money.
