How to Clean Your Topiary Decorations

June 6, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

Replica bush or tree topiary adornments can be difficult to make sparkle when they’re dirty, particularly topiaries with tiny blossoms dispersed all through the whole decorative blueprint. Pieces of the topiary could fall off when dabbed with a fabric from small blossoms and leafs or the fake dirt in the arrangement sits in. If some kind of duster is employed a small amount of the dust may get whacked off but it will remain briefly suspended in midair before some of it falls back down onto the topiary.

So in what way could you clean the topiaries deprived of stroking them with the smallest amount of damage to its small leafs, buds, etc.? Well, all you require is a hair dryer on its lowest setting and then you’ll be able to clear the topiary without even having to touch it.

All you have to do is hold the dryer at least half a foot from the topiary. Switch it to Low and blow all of the dust right off of your topiary. You might be required to make certain alterations to figure out how far you should hold the blow dryer from the topiary. If you put it too close it can blow off blossoms and leafs that are normally pretty secure on the topiary. A few unattached leafs and buds will possibly blow off and that’s typical. If an unwarranted amount starts flying off try to hold the dryer even further back.

As you’re positioning the blow dryer, gradually move it up and down all over the topiary letting it do the work of dusting. Be cautious to circumvent holding it in the same position for an extended period of time. When you’re thru sponge the bench or region round the topiary with a rag or damp cloth then vacuum or brush the ground to eliminate the fallen filth.

If you need a stress-free unsoiled space you could lay the topiary in the tub or sink to get rid of the dust or if you have a long electrical cord or an outside plug you can place the topiary outdoors.

If the topiary hasn’t been dusted in a long time you could have observed that its color has transformed to more of a yellowish shade. If there’s a staining you could blow dust off just enough so the appearance is much of a lighter yellow. Nevertheless there is the chance you won’t be able to remove all of the yellow. The staining could actually have become permanent.

Decorate Your Walls by Cleaning Out Your Closet

April 25, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

The continued tough job market makes it hard to spend extra money on home decorations. Still, that is no reason to leave your walls bare and boring. You can decorate your walls easily using items you may very well have chucked in a closet collecting dust. These decorating tips will give you some ideas you can use in your home.

Special occasion clothes that have been outgrown can make great wall hangings. When looking for items to hang on the walls of your children’s rooms, look for special occasion clothes they have outgrown and hang them on decorative hangers. At a later time when you have extra decorating money, you can have these clothing items framed in a shadow box.

Use costumes to make your walls more fun. If you have been in a play or performance, or if you have any holiday or party costumes you enjoy, don’t throw them in the closet, pin the costume items to a black felt backed board and hand it on the wall.

Concert tickets and theater playbills make great wall art. If you or your kids have attended concerts and come home with playbills, programs, posters, or even ticket stubs, you can make an awesome wall-hanging by arranging these items in a simple poster frame.

Sport and hobby equipment will look great on your wall. Whether you are into guitars, flutes, and wind instruments, or bats, hockey sticks, and baseball bats, your equipment will make an attractive statement hanging on your wall. In addition, it will make organization of your equipment easier. All you need to do is install hooks for these items on the wall so they can be removed from the wall, and replaced there when you are done with them. This way your rooms will represent who you are and what you do, and your closets will be less cluttered.

Remember as you look through your closet, just choose items you love, and don’t discriminate based on what someone else may or may not like. Keep in mind that gancy shoes can be displayed on shelves, jewelry can be arranged on a dark canvas, decorative boxes from the back of your closet, will look much nicer on a dining room shelf.

Tips, Secrets and Ideas for Decorating with Mirrors

March 28, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

Decorating your home with mirrors can give your home a touch of Vegas. Keep in mind that a constant refrain when it comes to the magic tricks of illusionists is that it is all done with mirrors. The addition of a few mirrors to your decorating scheme can work wonders for your house. Some tips, tricks, hints and secrets to decorating with mirrors are all you may need to save big money while making big changes to your décor.

Partition Mirrors

An effective means of decorating with mirrors is to create a screen of floor to ceiling mirrored panels. This decorating idea can be used to create a partition between two connected rooms that will result in providing a reflection of the entire room. The resulting effect is the potential doubling of the size of the room. An additional decorative element is the utilization of planes set at an angle to create a more aesthetically pleasing quality to your entryway.

Makeup Lights Around the Mirror Perimeter

A reason exists for why you see individual bulbs tracing the perimeter of a makeup mirror in dressing rooms. These lights provide a luminous quality around the reflection that facilitates the effort of making up your face. Even if you don’t really need or use makeup, the addition of these large bulbs around the perimeter of a bathroom or bedroom mirror provides a sense of style and decorative theatricality. This is a secret to decorating with mirrors that makes of theaters have known since the electrical light bulb was invented before Thomas Edison was even born.

Framing the Mirror

A decorating hint that allows you to save money when buying a mirror while creating a pleasing aesthetic that provides you with some artistic freedom lies in choosing to buy a simple frameless mirror at the store. The addition of a fancy frame around the reflective surface not only inhibits your decorating abilities, it tugs mercilessly on the pocketbook. Go for a mirror without a frame and then decorate with style by creating a personalized frame on the wall into which you place the actual mirror. A customized frame built in this way can be crafted from something as simple as a paint job to something as individualized as photographs you have taken yourself.

Oval Mirrors

A long oval mirror can do wonders for your decorating scheme. An oval mirror can serve a break in an otherwise rather drab and dull wall covering. The oval shape of this type of mirror can introduce a level of illusion in the form of creating the sensation of a window place on the wall. One terrific decorating hint when using an oval mirror is to place an object of fascination on the wall directly opposite so that it acts as a focal point to those viewing the mirror from an angled position of a couch or chair.

Buffet Mirror

The dining room is an excellent place to take advantage of the decorative qualities of a mirror. Place a mirror that extends along the entire section of the wall behind and above a buffet. Not only does this placement of a mirror create the illusion of more space, especially in a smaller dining area, but you can use it to create more natural lighting by placing candles on the buffet that will have their flame reflected by the mirror’s surface. A chandelier hanging down over the dining table also benefits from this decorative element by having it illumination doubled.

Simple Decorating to Brighten Up Winter

February 25, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

Does the middle of winter give you the blahs? If you’re like me, February brings a strong desire for spring and a real dislike for winter. Even if the weather is wintry outside, you can dress up the inside of your home to give you a touch of Spring. Here are a few simple ideas to brighten up your winter and give you a feel for spring’s beauty.

Change Your Curtains
A quick curtain change can make a huge difference in any room. Opt for bright and cheery colors and patterns to liven up the room.

Tablecloths and Placemats

In your kitchen, add a brightly-colored spring-like tablecloth or pretty placemats. Look for patterns that will make you think of spring–floral prints are especially nice.

Throw Rugs
A new throw rug in a cheery color can give any room a new look. Take a stroll through your local thrift store or dollar store for cheap rugs that will give your room a facelift.

Throws Over Furniture
I keep several throw blankets around my furniture during the winter to offer warmth to myself, my kids and any visitors who stop by. To give the living room a brighter, less wintry look and feel, opt for throws in floral prints and brighter colors. Drape them over the furniture to give the furniture a temporary new look and feel.

Rearrange Furniture
One of the best ways to give any room a fresh new look is to rearrange the furniture. If your rooms are small, like mine, this may not be the best option but perhaps moving a few things–an end table, a coffee table, a chair–can make a refreshing statement.

Paint
Paint is a more permanent decorating option, but perhaps you can simply paint cabinets, paint an end table, or add decorative effects (stencils, stamps) to your walls for a spring upgrade.

Add Lighting
One of the worst things about winter is the darkness. It gets dark early and when the sky is overcast it is dark and dreary. Add some strategic lighting to any room to create a cheerier look and feel. Invest in floor lamps or pendant lamps to add lights.

Spring Scents
While pleasant scents aren’t visual items to refresh a room, how the room smells can affect your mood in the room. When you have a hankering for spring, grab some air freshener or a few spring-scented candles (floral, fresh linen, fresh rain) and make the room smell great.

Winter Decorating Ideas for a Screened in Porch

February 22, 2020 by Marshall Wheeler

It’s almost that time of year when the weather turns cooler and summer fun comes to an end. If you have a screened in porch attached to your house, you undoubtedly spent many enjoyable summer hours out there entertaining family and friends during weekend barbecues as well as relaxing during the week with a good book and a glass of lemonade. While tiki lights, brightly colored throw pillows and fruit scented candles may have been your choices for summertime decorating for your screened in porch, updating your screened in porch decor for the winter season will ensure that your entire home has a seasonal flair.

Christmas Lights. Small white Christmas lights hung around the perimeter of the ceiling of your screened in porch will surely brighten those long winter nights. By lighting them before guests come over for the evening and opening the curtains on your windows and sliders, you will create a lovely ambiance and make your guests feel extremely cozy in your home.

Cardinals. Who doesn’t love the classic red winter bird? Beautiful red cardinal figurines can be placed on your glass table on your screened in porch for a colorful and festive display. If you have a white wicker furniture set on your screened in porch, several red cardinal decorations will create a very pretty and striking balance.

Christmas Tree. A small artificial Christmas tree placed in the corner of your screened in porch can be left up all winter long. Decorate the tree with stars, mitten and sled ornaments for a very pretty and inviting country look. The on line store TenderHeart Treasures carries some wonderful themed ornament packages that are appropriate to leave in place long after the Christmas holiday.

Wrought Iron Lanterns. Replace your light and breezy candle holders with black wrought iron lanterns for the winter. Lighting the lanterns on your screened in porch during a winter storm will surely warm up your home and offer some additional outside light to your house.

Winter Wreath. Several grapevine winter wreaths hung in your screened porch will quickly add some fun winter decor to this part of the house. You can either purchase winter themed wreaths ready to hang or spend a fun afternoon creating your own with a wreath, a hot glue gun and whatever items represents winter the most to you.

Snowmen. Pile your snowmen stuffed “animals” on the furniture in your screened in porch and arrange snowmen themed candle holders on the table. Be sure these items are well protected from the elements during a snow storm.

Use The Color Red. Not only is red a classic Christmas color, the bright rich color also helps to drastically brighten up gray Winter days. Switch out your pastel colored and designed seat cushions and pillows for deep red. The beauty and richness of color will help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere on your screened in porch during the long and cold months of winter.
